Last night the E-Myth saved my life

It’s been a while since I have had the time to sit down and write a blog post. This is both good and bad news. Good, because I have been so busy ‘doing’ work and Bad, because I have been so busy!

Confused? Well, I was, until a client recommended that I read the book the E-Myth

e-myth revisited

Granted, it has been around for a long time, but I’d never had the pleasure until now. Aside from it being a really easy to digest book, it made me realise within the first 40 pages that I had fallen into the first trap of small businesses. The curse of the ‘specialist’!

In a nutshell, people generally start a business based on what they know – what they’re good at. They start winning work and gaining traction then BOOM! They wake up one day and think, I’m exhausted, I don’t want to do this any more, it’s no fun. And that is the point that I had reached. I had more than enough work to keep me going – too much. I was stressed and starting to drop balls. This meant that clients weren’t getting 100% service and before long that would have resulted in disaster.

How did I solve the problem? Well, I haven’t… not quite anyway. I have made things better and hired another sidekick who not only supports me, but enhances the services that Virtual Sidekicks can provide. She frees up a bit more time so that I can focus on business growth and personal development and best of all, I don’t feel so overwhelmed any more.

It is but the first step on an uncertain road, but it’s a step I’m happy to take.
